Piaggio to make scooters in India

Italian auto company Piaggio, manufacturer of the iconic Vespa scooter, is to start production in India as part of plans to expand its operations on Asian markets, the company said on Friday.

In its 2009-2012 strategic plan, the company said it would “produce also in India” after opening a Vespa scooter plant in Vietnam last month. More

Maruti Suzuki launches new Grand Vitara

The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India today launched an advanced version of its sports utility vehicle Grand Vitara,
priced at Rs 16.67 lakh-Rs 17.97 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

“Highly popular the world over, the Grand Vitara is one of the global strategic models in Suzuki Range. For all those customers, who are increasingly looking at SUVs

Volvo Trucks bags order for 125 vehicles

Volvo Trucks in India has secured an order for 125 trucks which is its biggest order since it was established in the country 10 years ago.

A press statement from Volvo Trucks said the Hyderabad-based Vijay Leasing Company has placed an order for 125 Volvo FM trucks.

These trucks will be for use in coal and steel mines in southern India. Vijay Leasing already owns 108 Volvo trucks. A company spokesperson declined to give details about the value of the order. More

Car makers feel excise duty cut may pep up sales

Consumers have begun coming back to car showrooms following the recent cut in interest rates, say top industry officials. But manufacturers say a further excise cut would fuel faster growth in the coming months.

A sustained reduction in excise duties since 2003 led to a 20-24% drop in car prices fuelling growth in the passenger car market. In 2008, the government levied an additional excise of Rs 20,000 on cars powered by engines above 1500 cc. More

Maruti Suzuki unveils SUV-Grand Vitara

Maruti Suzuki India, the country`s largest passenger car manufacturer introduced a brand new version of its popular high end SUV-Grand Vitara.

The new Grand Vitara 2.4 comes reloaded with a 2.4 litre VVT (Variable Valve Timing) engine that delivers a maximum power of 163.5 bhp at 6000 rpm and a torque of 225 NM at 4000 rpm. The VVT engine on the new Grand Vitara 2.4 delivers a balanced mix of power and efficiency.

Tata to introduce `Nano` in Africa in next 18 months

Tata Motors, India`s largest auto maker is likely to introduce its small car `Nano`- considered the world`s cheapest car in Nigeria within the next 18 months, ahead of its planned launch in Europe.

The car would be available for about NGN 360 for the base model, same as the price in the Indian markets.

The car carries a price tag
of Rs 1.23 lakh to Rs 1.72 lakh (ex-showroom) in the Indian capital for three variants. More

Hero to take a call on Honda ties before 2014

The Hero group will decide on the future of its 25-year old joint venture with Japan’s Honda Motor well before the expiry of a crucial deadline in 2014, Pawan Munjal, the CEO of the JV firm, said in his most candid statement on the sensitive subject.

“2014 for me is a long way off. Of course, we will not let a situation arise that we are in 2014 and an event that has to happen is going to happen and we wake up to it. We will prepare ourselves and take a decision much before it happens. We will plan and prepare for it…,” he told ET NOW in an exclusive interview. Read more

Auto industry logs 11.5 pc growth

The automotive industry in India grew at a computed annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.5 per cent over the past five years, the Economic
Survey 2008-09 tabled in parliament Thursday said.

“The industry has a strong multiplier effect on the economy due to its deep forward and backward linkages with several key segments of the economy,” a finance ministry statement said. Read more

Bajaj Auto sales drop 4.52% in June

Bajaj Auto today reported a 4.52% fall in motorcycle sales
at 167,945 units in June against 1,75,903 units in the same month last year.

Total two-wheeler sales during the month stood at 168,471 units, a decrease of 4.88% over the same month last year.

The company sold 177,112 units of two-wheelers in the same period a year ago.

Bajaj Auto`s exports, however, went up by 4.39% to 67,726 units in June from 64,878 units a year ago. Read more

LGB to acquire MM Gears

Coimbatore-based Roller chain manufacturer, LG Balakrishnan & Bros (LGB) is acquiring a local gear and gear boxes maker, MM Gears
promoted by two first-generation entrepreneurs.

LGB signed an agreement with the promoters of MM Gears on Thursday, to acquire 100% shares of the firm subject to satisfactory due diligence. Started in 1995, MM Gears has an annual turnover of Rs 10 crore.

A senior official in LGB said the acquisition is in tune with its plan to enter gear and gear parts manufacturing. ” We see this a good opportunity coming at the right time since MM Gears already has an established production facility as well as market for the products”he said. Read more
