Luxury cars see brisk sales in slowdown season

The slowdown blues are yet to hit car sales at the top and the bottom ends of the spectrum. Automotive market sources said that the financial crisis has impacted segments between these two points because of inadequate finance options.

They added that the luxury and the entry-level segments commanded brisk sales. While dealers declined to comment citing OEM policies, market sources maintained that one dealership delivered as many as 65 units of General Motors’ small car, the Spark, on just one day of Diwali.

Sources added, “There is a three to six week waiting period for the Spark, priced, ex-showroom in Pune, between Rs 2.66 lakh and Rs 4 lakh. The waiting period for the Audi Q7 is six months. The demand for the BMW 7 Series, priced around Rs 75-80 lakh, is very high despite the fact that the model is due for a phase out by March 2009.” More
