Small is big for Hyundai, GM now

In what could further intensify competition with the Tatas’ Nano, Hyundai and General Motors India are actively considering plans to come out with smaller engines for their entry-level models that would give Indian customers additional choice at an aggressive price.

Both Hyundai and GM, which together account for a third of Asia’s second-largest small car market outside Japan, have decided to alter engine specifications which would have increased compliance with emission norms, besides ensuring higher fuel-efficiency, sources say. While Hyundai is looking at powering its entry-level car Santro with a smaller 800cc engine, GM is considering an alternate smaller 800cc engine to power Spark. More
