SUV is the new Indian road rage

The Americans may have started discarding their gigantic gas-guzzlers for small cars but Indians are snapping up luxury SUVs like never before. The premium SUV market in India is in heat. Hard on the heels of Audi’s Q7 which launched last September, a slew of topnotch SUVs are lining up for an extended debutantes’ ball from BMW’s X5 and Volvo’s XC90 to Mitsubishi’s Montero, GM’s Captiva and even Suzuki’s brand new Grand Vitara. Ashok Leyland unveils strategy to grow bus segment

The annual passenger vehicle market at 25,000 may remain flat, but commercial vehicle major Ashok Leyland (ALL) has chalked out a strategy to bring about a transformation in the segment.

Its gameplan is to offer customers a new range of buses, including fully-built vehicles and double the capacity of luxury liner — Irizar — a JV with TVS. It is also giving a push to designing buses and branding models like Viking, Irizar, Luxura (intercity), Panther and Tarmac (airport bus). “We know the market well, we have the range. In 3-4 years, two-third of our buses will be fully-built against 10% now,” ALL chief operating office Vinod K Dasari told ET. More

Tata Motors gets land for bus plant in Karnataka

Tata Motors`s proposal receives clearance,for additional 300 acres of land at Dharwad, Karnataka to set up luxury and mini bus plant, reports Business Standard.

The Karnataka Cabinet approved the company`s proposal for additional land for Rs 27.34 billion project.

The proposed plant is expected to commence production by 2008-09. It will have a capacity to produce 226,150 vehicles per year. More

VW holds supplier meet

Volkswagen’s first supplier conference was hosted in Mumbai on Wednesday and was attended by 250 suppliers from India and abroad. Mr Joerg Mueller, President, Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd, said, “Our objective is to establish VW as a local manufacturer and long-term business partner in India.” More
