Niche models lead mobike rally

India’s two-wheeler market could experience “the long-tail phenomenon”, where niche segments collectively make up a market share that rivals or exceeds the few blockbusters. The niche segments seem to be the only area within the two-wheeler market that will continue to grow this year.

During April-May 2007, growth was visible in motorcycles with engine capacities between 125 cc and 250 cc. This segment, which includes Bajaj Pulsar and Discover and Hero Honda CBZ, grew 13% to reach 2.18 lakh units. In the overall two-wheeler segment, the sub-75 cc segment, which includes TVS’ Scooty Pep, grew 21% on a cumulative basis for April-May with 67,235 units.

GM looking at SAARC nations for exports

Car maker General Motors India is planning to export its products to the SAARC countries, a top company official said on Monday.

The company has already lined up dealers in Nepal and Bangladesh and would soon sign an agreement with one in Sri Lanka. However, its priority would be consolidating the domestic market, General Motors India President and Managing Dirctor Rajeev Chaba told a press meet.

General Motors India also launched the Optra Diesel luxury Sedan and Chevrolet Spark Mini car in Kerala market. More

SAIC to buy 2 auto firms for 193 mn dlr

SAIC or Shanghai Auto, one of China’s top three car makers, said on Wednesday it will spend 1.475 billion yuan ($193 million) to buy take full control of two domestic auto firms.

The Shanghai-based firm will buy a 50 per cent stake in Shanghai Huizhong Automotive Manufacturing, an assembler of commercial heavy trucks and buses, for 1.205 billion yuan, a company statement said. It also said it would pay 270 million yuan for a 50 per cent stake in Shanghai Wanzhong Automotive Components Co. More

Auto growth slows to 6.55% in May07

Auto-industry growth has slowed to 6.55% for the second consecutive month on account of rising input costs and high interest rates on auto loans, report Business Standard.

Ford plans to offer more hybrids

Ford Motor Co is planning to expand its range of hybrid vehicles beyond the Ford Escape but sees deep-seated engineering problems facing the launch of a new generation of rechargeable electric cars, an executive said on Tuesday.

Nancy Gioia, who heads Ford hybrid and “sustainable” vehicle programs, said the automaker planned to offer more full hybrids - beyond the Ford Escape sport utility vehicle and its more upscale version, the Mercury Mariner. More

GM India to appoint more dealers

Enthused over the response to its hatchback Chevrolet ‘Spark’, General Motors India on Monday said it is considering appointment of more dealers in the country.

General Motors Director (Operation) Sanjiv Garh told a press conference here that at present the company had 78 dealers and this would progressively go upto 160 in two years. More
