Nippon Steel, Toyota agree to steel hike: Media

Nippon Steel Corp and Toyota Motor Corp have agreed to price rises of more than 10 per cent for specialty steel used to make auto parts, the Nikkei business daily reported on Wednesday.

Japan’s biggest steelmaker and its biggest automaker - whose agreements serve as the industry benchmark - are also likely to agree to a price rise of around 5 per cent for steel sheet used to make car bodies, the paper said.

Steel companies and automakers as a policy do not comment on price negotiations. More

Toyota takes No 1 slot, but when did GM lose the race?

Was it 2006 or 2007? The milestone that the global auto industry has been holding its collective breath for — Toyota Motor unseating General Motors as the world’s biggest carmaker — came last year instead of in 2007 as many had expected, according to a leading industry journal.

Detroit-based weekly Automotive News, whose data centre publishes a widely quoted ranking of the world’s automakers around this time every year, said Japan’s top carmaker outsold GM by about 1,28,000 units last year based on a technicality that excludes sales of vehicles at minority-held subsidiaries.

“A little-known Chinese microvan played a role in Toyota’s victory,” the magazine, published by Crain Communications, said on its website. More

Honda plans India-only 100 cc bike

Honda Motorcycle Scooters India (HMSI) today said it is developing a new motorcycle in the 100 cc segment for India, which could hit the market within three years.

HMSI’s President and CEO Shinji Aoyama, who assumed office earlier this month, said the company’s new 100 cc model could be positioned slightly higher than the existing ones in the market and sport a premium price tag. More

Britain contacts Ford over ‘Jaguar sale’

The British government has contacted Ford following a report the US automaker is to sell luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover, an official spokesman said Tuesday amid concern for the fate of British jobs.
Ford is understeood to have hired investment bankers to help sell Jaguar and Land Rover, which together employ 19,000 workers in Britain.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Tony Blair told reporters on Tuesday that the government was “in touch” with Ford.

Ford has yet to confirm a story in the Financial Times that the ailing US company had instructed investment bankers at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and HSBC to sell the brands.

Luxury car maker Audi on Wednesday said it has commenced its operations in India by establishing a sales office in the country.
The German car manufacturer would operate in India as a division of Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt Ltd and would be based in Mumbai, Audi said in a statement.
The company’s board has appointed Benoit Tiers as Managing Director for Audi India. More

Toyota develops more fuel-efficient engine system

Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp said on Tuesday it had developed a next-generation engine valve mechanism that can improve the fuel efficiency of petrol-powered vehicles by about five to 10 per cent.

The new system also reduces carbon dioxide emissions, boosts engine output by at least 10 per cent and enhances acceleration responsiveness, the Japanese auto giant said in a statement.

Auto major Toyota Kirloskar on Wednesday said it has sold 140 units of its premium hatchback Corolla limited edition within 20 days of its launch.

Toyota tops GM in 2006 global sales: Report

Toyota Motor Corp edged past General Motors Corp to become the world’s biggest automaker by sales volume in 2006, leading industry paper Automotive News said. The Automotive News Data Center, which publishes a widely quoted annual ranking of the world’s automakers, said Japan’s top carmaker outsold General Motors by about 128,000 units, with 8,808,000 units, when stripping out commercial vehicles built by a General Motors affiliate in China.
