Volvo plans 2 new cars every year in India

Expressing optimism over the Indian automart, Swedish car major Volvo on Monday said it planned to introduce two new models every year, while it sets eyes on gradually expanding its dealer network in the country.

“By the end of the year we will be introducing our sedan S80 and SUV XC90. These vehicles have been undergoing homologation in India and almost all the tests are coming to an end,” Volvo Car India Managing Director Paul de Voijs told media. More

M&M plans to acquire Lokesh Machines

The Rs 180 billion auto major, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is planning to acquire 51% stake in Hyderabad-based Lokesh Machines, reports DNA.

World’s cheapest car may be pricier than promised

High raw material costs and production delays could force Tata Motors to raise the price of the world’s cheapest car, with suppliers resisting pressure to lower prices any further.

Tata Motors is turning the screws on parts makers as it pushes to launch the car next spring or summer, despite delays in construction of the plant in the state of West Bengal after farmers opposed the acquisition of their land.

The company, had earlier anounced the launch would be in early 2008. Suppliers, already grappling with volatile raw material costs and softer domestic demand, are baulking at Tata’s price and delivery targets. Some have reportedly turned down its orders and others are seeking guarantees on volumes and prices. More

Honda to recall 2,310 Accords for fuel pump snag

The breed of next generation high-tech vehicles are having their share of problems. After Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors and Maruti’s minor hiccups with their new products, Honda Siel Car India (HSCI) is recalling 2,310 units of Accord sedans to replace a relay in the fuel-pump of the car.

HSCI, as part of the global campaign of parent Honda Motor Company, has informed customers that it will replace the defective parts. This is the second technical glitch for HSCI which had earlier recalled 4,459 units of its premium SUV model CR-V for a free fuel tank replacement last month.

Tata Motors invests in Thailand automobile plant

Tata Motors has invested in a 1.3 billion baht (around $39 million) joint venture to manufacture and assemble one-ton pickup trucks in Thailand, media reports confirmed on Thursday.

Tata Motors (Thailand) Company, a joint venture between India’s Tata Motor (70 percent) and Thailand’s Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant (30 percent), was granted Board of Investment BoI tax incentives on Wednesday to assemble and manufacture parts for 35,000 pickups a year bearing the Tata logo, the Bangkok Post reported. Nissan unveils ‘pull-out’ van concept

Nissan unveiled a new concept van with a novel pull-out pay load section and giant off-road tyres on Monday and said it was looking to drive up small van sales in Russia, eastern Europe and Turkey.

The Japanese firm took the covers off the new NV200 concept in front of media at its European design centre ahead of its official unveiling at the Japanese motor show in October.

The most eye-catching feature is a pay-load pod that pulls out from the rear of the van and has separate built-in storage sections like a giant tool box. When the pod is pulled out it leaves a space in the back of the van that can then be used as a work space or a mini office.

Honda calls back faulty Accords

Honda Siel Cars India today said it is calling back more than 2,000 units of its premium sedan Accord to replace faulty relay fuel-pump as part of a global campaign by its parent company in Japan.

The company has asked 2,310 Accord customers in India, who purchased their cars in 2005 and 2006 to bring their cars to its service centres for the replacement of relay fuel-pump. More

India Inc drives up to Ford

Auto majors Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have made it to the shortlist of bidders for Ford’s British brands Jaguar and Land Rover.

According to automobile industry sources, officials from Ford Motor have been in touch with both companies, who will now begin the actual process of hiring advisors, starting due diligence and organising factory visits. When contacted, both companies refused to comment. More

Minda, Valeo JV goes on stream

Noida-based Ashok Minda Group, a leading manufacturer of automotive components, recently inked a 50:50 joint venture with French major Valeo to develop, produce and sell the entire range of Valeo Security Systems at a new facility in Pune. The agreement would allow the joint venture to integrate the existing four-wheeler security systems business of Minda. This is the first of the three proposed joint ventures between the two companies.

Auto Monitor was the first to report on three joint ventures that the two groups are planning in India. A Memorandum of Understanding to this effect has already been signed. The two other JVs would include one on starter motors and alternators, while the third JV would be on Engine Gas Regulated (EGR) valves. Read more
