Buzz at Bajaj Auto unit to end after 4 decades

With the shut-down of Bajaj Auto Ltd’s (BAL) Akurdi plant near here from Saturday, an uncertain future awaits over 2,000 workers employed at the unit which rolled out lakhs of two and three wheelers for the last four decades on the Indian streets and also abroad.
Although the Bajaj Auto management’s decision announced by Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj on Wednesday night has come as a shocker for many, the recent introduction of a four-day week in the factory had been seen as a final countdown before halting the vehicle production completely.

Bajaj Auto to launch 125 CC bike next month

Two-wheeler major Bajaj Auto Ltd will launch a new range of bike of the 125 cc variant, fitted with DTS-Si technology, next month in the country.
“Bajaj will offer customers a value proposition much superior to the currently overpriced and under performing 100cc products with the launch of an all new bike with the DTS-Si engine next month,” said Bajaj Auto General Manager (Marketing) Amit Nandi in a release issued here. More

Honda to play safe with new City variant

In a bid to regain the top slot in the mid-size car segment, Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) will launch an all-new variant of its flagship model City with a host of safety features in the first half of September.

Honda City had lost the top position for the past two consecutive months. In June, it was toppled by Maruti Suzuki’s new entrant SX4 and in July, it was trumped by Mahindra and Mahindra’s (M&M) Logan. M&M sold 2,890 units of Logan while Maruti-Suzuki sold 2,840 units of SX4 in July. City came third with sales of 2,465 units. More

Hybrid cars to hit Indian roads in 2008

Hybrid vehicles are set to hit Indian roads next year. Both Honda Siel Cars India and homegrown Mahindra & Mahindra have indicated that they will make their hybrid vehicles commercial by next year. Other auto makers, such as Toyota and Ford, are also exploring the market for hybrid vehicles in the country.

Hybrid vehicles run on electricity and another fuel, which could be petrol, diesel or bio-fuel. The car owner has the option to drive the car using either electricity or petrol and can easily switch from one to another. These vehicles help reduce emissions by generating power from an electric motor, burning less fuel for each mile travelled. More

TVS forays into three-wheeler segment; rolls out 7 vehicles

TVS Motor Company today rolled out seven vehicles, including three variants of its new three-wheeler, marking its foray into the segment.

The products are expected to be launched in a phased manner between October and November this year and prices will be announced prior to the launch. More

Networking helps Tata Motors improve efficiency

When Tata Motors suffered a record loss of nearly Rs 500 crore in 2000, it searched for ways to become a more efficient operation. An online customer relationship management system and a dealer management system were among the ideas that came up, and the first took off in 2003.

Recently, Tata Motors connected the 1,000th dealer to its online integrated Customer Relationship Management-Dealer Management System (CRM-DMS). This milestone, coupled with the monitoring of the service to more than 25,000 customers, makes it the largest implementation of a CRM program in the automobile industry anywhere in the world, according to Siebel and Tata Motors.

TVS Motors to roll out CNG bikes in January

TVS Motors, the third largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the country, on Thursday announced it would launch a compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered motorcycle in January next year as its contribution to a “green revolution”.

“We have the technology for CNG-powered two- and three-wheelers. We will launch CNG-powered two-wheelers in January,” said TVS Motors chairman and managing director Venu Srinivasan here on Thursday.

TVS Motors rolled out seven new products in a single day - a first-of-its-kind launch in the industry.

eBay to focus on heavy commercial vehicles in Punjab & Haryana

e-Bay Motors India, an online business-to-business (B2B) market place, has said it would focus on trading in used heavy commercial vehicles (HCV) such as trucks and trailers in Punjab and Haryana.

“Punjab and Haryana are the largest contributors of HCV and trailers on B2B platform. These states are emerging as the largest hub for used trucks and trailers in the northern region. These factors promoted us to focus on HCV and tractor segments in these states,” e-Bay Motors India Private Limited Director (Motors) Amit Bhartiya said today. More

Expect Jaguar, Land Rover sale by year-end: Ford

Ford Motor Co on Wednesday said it expects the sale of its two European marques Jaguar and Land Rover, in which India’s Tata Motors has evinced interest, to be through either by this year-end or early next year.

“We expect the process to end at the end of this year or the beginning of next year,” an official of Ford’s Premier Automotive Group told agencies, but wished not to be identified. More
