Tatas’ Rs 1 lakh car to sport rear engine

Many may find it difficult to digest that Ratan Tata’s billion-dollar empire is getting its biggest buzz from something as mundane as the Rs 1-lakh car. However, for Mr Tata, the last few years have been spent personally overseeing the project which will turn the Rs 1-lakh car dream into a reality.

It’s a project that the entire auto world — from Detroit to Japan — is watching keenly, for it could change the dynamics of the global car market. Not much has been forthcoming from the Tatas so far, and the details of the project are a closely-guarded secret. Every time the management of Tata Motors has been asked about the car, all it has said is ‘wait and watch’.

TAFE, City Union Bank enter into tie-up

Tractor manufacturer TAFE today shook hands with City Union Bank over an agreement under which the bank will provide quicker and easier finance for those who buy the company’s tractors.

A farmer could avail himself of a loan paying only 5 per cent of the tractor’s cost upfront. A typical loan arrangement will be for an interest rate of 11.75 per cent and a period of seven years.

For TAFE, which is the country’s second largest tractor manufacturer (after Mahindra & Mahindra), this is not the first agreement with a bank, but for City Union Bank it is the first and the only one with a tractor company. More

SUVs drive into C class with new models

Discount schemes help Maruti beat interest rate blues

Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) on Friday said various discount schemes coupled with a few launches helped the company offset the impact of high interest rates on its sales during the current fiscal.

“Our discount schemes gave us good numbers this year. There has been an impact of high interest rates on car sales but we have been able to offset the impact by introducing new sales scheme,” MSIL Vice-President (Marketing) Mayank Parekh told reporters here.

MSIL has introduced several new schemes to boost sales like Wheels of India’ for state government employees, First Class Offer for railway employees, Power Deal for NTPC staff, Steel Wheel for SAIL, scheme for teachers, panchayat scheme for rural consumers and lalkaar - an employee referral scheme. Auto cos offer sops to drive up sales

Car makers are offering huge discounts and incentives, while banks are offering lower interest rate packages to lure customers back to the showrooms for the next two months, the peak of the festive season.

Leading the pack is Maruti-Suzuki, which plans to offer a discount of as much as 12% on its prices. Maruti-Suzuki’s chief general manager, marketing, Mayank Parekh told ET, “Specific models like Zen Estilo and WagonR will carry high rebate offers while our best-selling model Alto will also have attractive price discounting schemes. We are also working with our banks and dealers to offer single-digit interest rates during the Diwali season.” More

Toyota says new fuel-cell car can go further on single tank

Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday that its new hydrogen powered fuel-cell car had successfully completed a long-distance road test and was shown to be 25 percent more fuel efficient than earlier versions.

The FCHV vehicle was driven about 560 kilometers (350 miles) on a single fueling and finished with 30 percent of the hydrogen still in the tank, said Yoshihiko Masuda, who heads Toyota’s fuel-cell car development.

The vehicle should be able to travel 880 kilometers on a full tank of hydrogen, which is “the longest-distance journey for fuel-cell cars (on a single fueling) as far as I know,” said Masuda.

Mahindra and Mahindra, maker of utility vehicles, on Thursday launched its lifestyle Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) - Scorpio Gateway.

Gateway is based on the Scorpio platform and sports a grand deck that can carry various equipment and gear as per an individual’s lifestyle needs.

Small car project is social responsibility: Tata Motors

Tata Motors today said coming out with the Rs one lakh car is both a social and business responsibility.

“The Rs 1 lakh small car would bring down the carbon dioxide emission,” Tata Motors MD Ravi Kanth told reporters.

Kanth said that the launch of the car cannot be deferred or stopped due to lack of infrastructure.

“Infrastructure woes are being taken care of by the government. Both infrastructure development and launch of the small car have to be done parallely,” he said. More

‘DaimlerChrysler facing tough time

The monopoly of DaimlerChrysler India in the luxury car segment is likely to come to an end with a few global majors such as BMW and Audi players entering the fray. Mr Suhas Kadlaskar, Director (Corporate Affairs) of DaimlerChrysler, said that the company might lose significant market share in the next few years. The luxury car market size, which is about 3,000 units at present, is likely to reach 6,000 units in the next two years. More
