Carmakers are rushing to produce low-cost cars for well under 10,000 euros ($14,000) to tap growing mass markets in countries such as China, India and Brazil.
A range of small, compact and economical cars were presented at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) including the Daihatsu Cuore, Fiat 500, Toyota iQ, VW Up and Opel Agila.
The French car maker Renault, which produces the low-cost Dacia Logan in Romania, announced in Frankfurt that it was looking at producing cars for countries such as China and Brazil for as little as 2,000 euros. More

Automobile manufacturer Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) on Monday reported a 24.9 per cent increase in its domestic vehicle sales during September at 18,569 units against 14,865 in the corresponding month a year ago.
Sales in September included 2,185 units of its mid-sized sedan Mahindra Renault Logan, M&M said in a statement.
Exports during the month grew 23.41 per cent at 1,302 vehicles against 1,055 units in September last year. More

Volvo , the world’s No. 2 truckmaker, was leading the race buy a majority stake in India’s Eicher Motors reported on Thursday, citing unnamed sources. The paper said Volvo was in advanced negotiations with the Indian truckmaker and had offered 675 rupees ($17.05) per share, topping an offer of 500 rupees a share offer from DaimlerChrysler .

Tata Steel, which acquired Corus Group Plc for $12 billion in January, will raise prices for the second straight month as construction and automobile companies in India increase orders to meet demand.
Prices of long products for immediate delivery would be raised by as much as 2 per cent, or Rs 600 ($15) a tonne, from tomorrow, Deputy Managing Director T Mukherjee said in a telephone interview today. More

Sundaram Clayton will have a ?minimal? growth this year due to slowdown witnessed in Indian economy and the US market, the company?s managing director, Mr Venu Srinivasan, told shareholders.
However, next year business will improve, he said at the company?s 45th annual general meeting.
The company recorded a 30 per cent growth in turnover to Rs 816 crore during 2006-07 compared with Rs 629 crore in the previous year.
Mr Srinivasan said in five years there would be a significant growth in the export of brakes.

India`s second largest two wheeler maker, Bajaj Auto, registered a steep fall of 23% in total sales of two and three wheelers for the month of the September 2007. It sold total of 232,496 units of two and three wheelers in September 2007 as compared with 300,141 units sold in September 2006.
On the other hand, export of two and three wheelers grew 30% in September 2007 to 48,048 units compared with 37,088 units in September 2006. More

Tata Group, which shot into prominence in Europe through acquisition of steel maker Corus on Monday said it will soon relaunch its Indica car brand in the UK market in an attractive price band.
The Indica, known to Europeans as City Rover, was rolled out in November 2003 but did not succeed in the market where consumers are very choosy about the vehicles they buy.
“In hindsight, it appears pricing was the reason (for the failure),” said S A Hasan, Managing Director of Tata Ltd, the wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Group in the UK. The car was then launched in a price band of 6,500-8,500 pounds. More

As global automakers eye the burgeoning small car market in India, UK-based Caparo Group is developing a ‘city car’ which would be franchised for production to other manufacturers in the country.
“We are working on a two-year project for designing a city car which will be made up of composite material and more efficient,” Caparo Group Founder and Chairman Lord Swaraj Paul said on Monday on the sidelines of a FICCI event.
He said Caparo would only design the car and but it would not get into production by itself.

Indian corporate conglomerate Tatas’ takeover bid for Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR), the UK brands of the American auto giant Ford, may be still hanging in balance, but the group enjoys a long and close relationship (about four-year old) with the target company.
“JLR is one of our most important strategic clients,” said David Myers, Chief Financial Officer of INCAT Ltd, a UK-based Tata Technologies company engaged in providing engineering and design services primarily to automotive and aerospace industries.
“We have over 200 clients in the UK and JLR is certainly one of the most important among them,” Myers told a group of visiting Indian journalists here. More
