New Maruti Zen in great demand in Sri Lanka

The latest Maruti-suzuki-Zen car that was designed to take on the other major competitors in the small-car segment in India, has become a rage in the island country.

Associated Motorways (AWW), the sole agent for Suzuki-Maruti in Sri Lanka has placed orders for Zen cars from the Suzuki manufacturing plant in India following high demand.

Despite the fact that prospects of car sales in Sri Lanka was not attractive as in other countries due to the country’s economic condition, Maruti-Suzuki has found high demand for its latest Zen version. More

Renault, Toyota, Volkswagen hurt as European car sales drop in Sept

European car sales fell in September on weaker demand for Renault, Toyota Motor and Volkswagen models as declines in Germany and Spain undermined buoyant business in eastern Europe.

New car registrations fell 1.5% to 1.42 million vehicles from 1.44 million a year earlier, the Brussels-based European Automobile Manufacturers Association said today in a statement. Sales for the first nine months of the year gained 0.7% to 12.2 million. European carmakers are looking east for customers amid sagging demand in home markets. A 9.5% jump in eastern European sales was not enough to make up for September?s 2.1% decline in western Europe, which still accounts for most sales. More

Bengal to set up auto parts hub on 500 acres

With the Tata Motors’ Rs 1-lakh car project and its adjoining vendor park gradually taking shape at Singur, the West Bengal government has now decided to set up an auto components hub at Guptamoni in West Midnapore district. This was announced by the state commerce and industries minister Nirupam Sen in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Mr Sen was speaking at an interactive session with a 16-member German delegation from the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). He said that the auto components hub would come up on 500 acres at Guptamoni. More

Ashok Leyland to form JV in South Africa

Ashok Leyland (Q, N,C,F)* is planning toform a joint venture (JV) with a Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) partner to introduce products like 4×4s and luxury buses in South Africa.

The South African partner will own 49% stake in the new company. The company will run the assembly line plants in Durban and Centurion, near Pretoria. More

Hero Honda to firm up it position in premium segment

Looking to consolidate its share in the performance-driven premium bike segment, country’s largest bike maker Hero Honda Motors (HHML) on Wednesday launched its 150 cc motorcycle - Hunk at a starting price of at Rs 55,000 (ex-showroom Delhi).

Hero Honda Hunk is the company’s fourth offering in the premium bike segment after 156 cc CBZ Xtreme, 150 cc Achiever and 225 cc Karizma. The company presently has 15-20 per cent share in the premium bike segment which is dominated by rival Bajaj Auto with its Pulsar range of motorcycles. More

Suzuki to invest $1.6 b in new plant by 2011

Toyota to recall 470,000 cars due to defective parts

Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday it was recalling more than 470,000 cars in Japan due to problems with the fuel and steering systems in the latest dent to the automaker’s reputation for quality.

The Japanese auto giant will recall 277,074 passenger cars of eight models, including the Crown luxury sedan, produced in Japan between September 1999 and October 2004, the automaker said.

Bajaj Auto offers VRS to Waluj workers

Bajaj Auto has offerred a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) to its 3,980 workers at its plant at Waluj, near Aurangabad. The scheme, which is open till October 27 and has been formulated at the request of the workers, company officials said, adding that the company will decide how many workers it can release. More
