BMW India plans small luxury car

Luxury car manufacturer BMW India is conducting a market study on the feasibility of a small car in the luxury segment. “We have not decided on our plans for small cars in India… but are conducting a study to analyse the market,” BMW India president Peter Kronschnabl told reporters.

“Our small cars cost Rs 10 lakh overseas. Importing them here will increase the price by more than 100%. We are not sure whether a small luxury car with such a pricing will work in India,” he added.

Renault to roll out 12 new models in global assault

French carmaker Renault is to unveil 12 new models next year - including several low-cost autos - in an aggressive global strategy to turn around stagnating sales, the company said Wednesday.

Company chief Carlos Ghosn told a media conference in Brazil that Renault was also looking at making a new budget car in India costing just 3,000 dollars to compete against the local manufacturer Tata. More

Tata to unveil Rs 1 lakh car at Jan 10 Auto Expo

Car enthusiasts can get the first glimpse of the much talked about Tata Motors? Rs 1-lakh car during the ninth Auto Expo scheduled in New Delhi on January 10. However, commercial launch of the model will not take place before mid-2008.

Tata Motors will be jointly participating with Fiat in the expo, which begins on January 9, and will be spread over a pavilion of over 5,200 square metres.

The expo, a biennial event, has been showcasing the Indian automobile and auto component industry for the last 18 years.

The Rs 1-lakh car, which the Tatas say will be a ?people?s car?, has been much talked about not only in India but in the global arena in recent times. More

Jaguar-Rover: Another New Year gift for Tatas?

Last year the Tatas celebrated New Year in high spirits as by then it was within striking distance of snapping up Anglo-Dutch steel maker Corus, for about $13 billion to become the world?s fifth largest steel producer. This time around a similar spirit pervades Bombay House, as the stage appears set for the Tatas to clinch another overseas acquisition ? in the automobile segment.

Tatas look certain to emerge as the winning bidder for Ford?s iconic brands, Jaguar and Land Rover, outpacing its domestic rival Mahindra & Mahindra and the American buyout group OneEquity. ?As of now, Tatas are ahead in the race and, barring any last-minute surprises, are most likely to be named as the preferred bidder,? a source close to the development said.

Maruti rolls out special saving scheme

Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) on Tuesday rolled out a special savings scheme, Happy Customer Offer, under which it will sell cars at discounted prices ranging from Rs 18,500 to Rs 57,500 across various models, reports Economic Times.

The discount comes just before the company is expected to hike prices of its various models by up to Rs 2,000. More

Tata Motors to display Rs 1 lakh car next month

Tata Motors plans to unveil its new ultracheap car at an auto show here next month, the company said on Wednesday.

Tata Motors says the model will sell for just Rs 1,00,000 (US$2,500), and analysts say the car could force other manufacturers to lower their own pricing. More

Maruti to kick-off car designing from 2010

Maruti Suzuki India, the country`s biggest carmaker, is planning to start designing cars in India by 2010. It has sent around hundred employees for training in Japan for the purpose.

The training includes hardcore designing as well as developing research-related capabilities.
