BMW aims to be market leader in premium car segment by 2010

The German luxury car making group BMW sold a record 350,000 vehicles in the first quarter of 2008, it said on Monday, pointing to a boom in demand in India.
BMW reported overall sales of 351,787 units, an increase of 5.7 percent from the first quarter of 2007, a statement said. More

German luxury car and bike maker BMW, which has been shying away from re-entering the Indian motorcycle market, is now looking to source parts for engines and chassis for its high-end two-wheelers from the country.
“Already we have been sourcing motorcycle parts such as handle bars and die cast from India. Now we are exploring to source components for engine and chassis parts,” BMW Board Member (international parts sourcing) Herbert Diess said here. More

High homologation fee bothers BMW on ‘Mini’ plans for India
Published March 19th, 2008 in BMW. 0 CommentsThe 200,000 euro fee that Indian authorities charge for homologating new car models for selling in India is bothering German luxury carmaker BMW, which wants to bring its small car model Mini in India by 2009.
“2009 is the 50th anniversary of Mini and we want to make it sure that the Indian customers also become a part of the celebration when we launch the model there. However, the homologation fee of 200,000 euros for a model is a big ask,” BMW Group Senior Vice-President Kay Segler told visiting Indian reporters here. Read more

A longer homologation process hampers the launch of BMW India?s crossover SUV, the X6. The President of BMW India, Mr Peter Kronschnabl, said the process consumes more than six months and therefore, the possibility of launching the vehicle during the current calendar was remote.
Talking to the media after announcing the opening of its dealership, Kun Exclusive, in Chennai, he said the company was actively considering sourcing of more components from India. The company was interested in sourcing forging and castings among others, he said. Read more
