Toyota Motor has taken the first-quarter global automotive sales lead from General Motors, selling 2.41 million vehicles to GM?s 2.25 million over the first three months of the year.
GM said on Wednesday that its first-quarter sales dropped across the globe by less than 1%, but Toyota said its sales were up 2.7% during the January-March period.
GM barely won the global sales race with Japan-based Toyota last year. Toyota overtook General Motors as the world?s top automaker in global vehicle production last year. A record 64% of GM?s sales came from outside the United States. More

General Motors Corp on Thursday showed off its progress in developing the highly anticipated Chevrolet Volt and detailed its road map for bringing the rechargeable car to the market by 2010, an ambitious timeline challenged by some rivals.
“We are moving with incredible speed,” said Frank Weber, GM’s vehicle line executive in charge of the Volt. “This project is not concept work. This program is not theory. It is reality.” Read more

General Motors India on Tuesday reported 51 per cent increase in sales in March at 6,836 units as against 4,542 units in the same month last year.
The company said its March sales was the highest ever monthly figure achieved by GM India since its inception. Read more

General Motors Corp wants to launch a second small car in India in the next two years as it looks to capitalise on growth in emerging markets to offset any sluggishness in US sales, a senior company official said.
The model will not compete directly with Tata Motors’ low-cost Nano but will be cheaper than GM’s current lowest priced car in India, David Reilly, GM group vice-president, told a news conference on Monday. More

General Motors India (GMI) will start the trial run of its second plant at Talegaon near Pune by the end of next week, a company official said on Wednesday.
“The trial run was supposed to start sometime in April, but that has been advanced as Asia-Pacific President of our parent company is coming to India next week,” GMI Director & Vice-President (Corporate Affairs) P Balendran said here. More

Auto parts maker Avtec, part of the C.K. Birla Group, is investing Rs 200 crore to expand its engine and transmission components capacity. The proposed expansion would be at its Chennai and Indore plants for the export market.
�We are investing Rs 200 crore by the end of March 2009 to increase our engine and transmission capacity to service a North American auto original equipment maker. General Motors Corp is planning for half its cars in the United States to be running on ethanol by 2012.
The report quoted GM North America President Troy Clarke at the Chicago Auto Show as saying GM will have 11 ethanol-capable vehicles on the market this year and 15 in 2009. Read more

US auto major General Motors is likely to up its stake in its Chinese venture SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co. The growing interest in the joint venture is the result of GM’s strategy to make cheap small cars to compete with the recently show-cased sub-$2,500 Tata Nano.
Wuling is an integral part of GM’s overall growth strategy in China, both in terms of product development and sales. The auto major is satisfied with its stake in the joint venture and the relationship with the two partners in China. General Motors Corp will introduce a new hybrid full-size pickup and a concept hybrid truck this week at the Chicago Auto Show, betting that pickup drivers have been itching to jump on the hybrid bandwagon.
