Car sales gain momentum in April

The domestic auto market is showing signs of revival thanks to the 4 percentage point cut (400 bps) in excise duty on cars and two-wheelers announced in February. Hyundai domestic sales up 36.71 pc in April

Car maker Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) on Thursday reported a 36.71 per cent jump in domestic passenger car sales during April at 21,501 units, against 15,728 units in the corresponding month of 2007.

The company’s cumulative sales (including exports) during April were up 47.77 per cent at 40,001 units, compared to 27,069 units in the same month a year ago, Hyundai Motor India said in a statement. More

Toyota’s small sedan to debut by 2010

World’s second largest car maker Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has joined the small car bandwagon.

After producing a range of utility vehicles and premium sedans during its decade long stint in India, it plans to debut its new global compact sedan by 2010. It is setting up a new manufacturing facility by investing Rs 1,400 crore to initially produce 1 lakh cars annually. More

Four-wheeler sales hit speed-breaker

THE growth in the four-wheeler industry witnessed a slowdown in the first quarter of 2008 while the two-wheeler sector continued to bleed due to high interest rates and stringent financing norms.

Passenger cars clocked low volumes. In March 2008, Maruti reported a 2.1 per cent decline in volumes while Hyundai’s i10 wrested the market share in the A2 segment. But with excise duty cuts in the budget, volumes in the automotive sector are likely to perk up.

Hyundai Motor India crossed the 500,000 mark in exports with the i10 model in March. HMIL doubled its production capacity from 300,000 units to 600,000 units per annum with the commissioning of its new plant at Chennai in February. More

Hyundai small car to drive out of Chennai plant

Hyundai Motor India (HMIL), the wholly-owned subsidiary of South Korean auto major Hyundai Motor Company, plans to roll out its low-cost cars, priced at around $3,500, from India.

The low-cost cars, which will compete with the Tata Nano, are at the evolution stage at its R&D centre in Seoul. The company is yet to take a final call on the production schedule. More

Hyundai becomes associate sponsor for IPL

Car maker Hyundai has become one of the six associate sponsors of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) by buying air time rights from the official broadcaster Sony Set Max.
