New Honda Accord - good car to buy
Published March 10th, 2007 in Honda India, Launches and Test Drives & Reviews. 197 CommentsWhat’s changed? Not much, the only major visible difference on the exterior is at the rear. Gone are the oversized rear lamps, now replaced by smaller triangular units which get LED parking/brake lights. The third-brake light is integrated into the boot lid and the reverse lamps are placed along the number-plate housing on the boot. The rear bumper is lower to aid loading luggage. The new rear lamps are high-mounted and this gives it a new identity. The bumper does look heavier at the edges though. So the only chink in the Accord’s styling armory – ungainly rear lamps — is now resolved, giving the car a more meaningful look.
The attractive front-end dominated by those eagle-eyed headlamps didn’t require any change and Honda has kept it largely untouched. There are minor changes but so subtle that you probably won’t be able to tell the difference even with the earlier model parked side by side. The 2.4-litre variant like the V6 earlier now gets indicators on the side view mirrors, a trend that’s catching on internationally. A new front grille is also part of the makeover. More

Hyundai Sonata Diesel - Sonata Salvation
Published February 27th, 2007 in Hyundai Motors and Test Drives & Reviews. 0 CommentsDiesel has the power to save. Without a diesel motor to get sales kick-started, the Tata Indica wouldn’t be the success it is today and the same goes for the Toyota Innova. By slapping on a diesel, Hyundai will provide the most cost-effective diesel luxury car in the market, giving the Sonata a second shot at success.
Displacing the same capacity as the motor under the hood of the Elantra, but making considerably more power and torque, this motor also comes with a six-speed manual gearbox. Like all diesel motors however, it’s the torque output that’s most impressive — a very healthy 31.3kgm. This common-rail diesel motor had earlier been developed by Detroit Diesel but Hyundai has updated it substantially for more refinement and power.
The largest physical change is the presence of a variable geometry turbocharger that improves low and high engine speed performance. However, to enable the power to be upped from 112 to 138bhp, Hyundai used a large-capacity, high-flow turbocharger. The large, comfortable interiors of the Sonata are identical to those of the petrol car and are a comfortable place to be. The only difference — the diesel motor tachometer displays a redline of only 4500rpm as the diesel has a shorter power-band.
With its Mercedes E-Class-like cabin dimensions, there’s plenty of space both at the front and rear of the car and legroom is ample as well. The seats are large and supportive and there are several places to store your personal effects. The design of the dash with its two-tone upper and lower half split by a streamer of ‘wood’ is very reminiscent of earlier Mercs. But that’s where the comparison ends. More
