How Tortoise got their shells

Before human beings came on Mother Earth, all the animals would live anywhere they want.

Tortoises used to live under the tree. In the mornings they would swim in the sea and in the evenings they would take sunbath on the beaches. But in the night they will walk a long way and go back into the jungle to sleep under the trees.

They liked to sleep under the trees because they could see the colorful fruits in the trees shine in the night. Just like the stars.

But one day a pack of leopards visited the jungle. During the day they would go for hunting. In the night they liked to sleep on the trees.

Now, the tortoises were scared. What if any of the leopards fell on them while they were sleeping under the tree?

So the tortoises decided to shift their home. They had a choice – the sea or the beach. But the beach was too big. And the sea was more fun because there were creatures of all kinds.

That night all the tortoises stayed in the sea. But there was a problem. They had to keep swimming otherwise they would all drown in the sea. So they could not sleep the whole night.

Now the tortoises did not have any home. After a long discussion, they decided to go to King Tortoise and seek his advice.

King Tortoise was a very wise man. He heard the problem of his people and then laughed out loud.

“This is a simple problem,” he said.

He looked around. Some distance away he could see a coconut tree. He asked a young tortoise to run and get a coconut.

When the coconut was brought, King Tortoise broke it into using his teeth. He then placed the cup like one-half of the coconut on the back of the young tortoise.

“From now on wards, you will carry your home with you, always,” he told the young tortoise.

Since then, all the tortoises have a shell on their backs. This shell grows with the tortoise and is its home.
