Catch 22: MS Dhoni becomes India’s most successful captain

India’s innings-and-135-run victory over a hapless Australia on the fourth morning of the Hyderabad Test was not an ordinary win. It was their second-biggest victory over their opponents, but more significantly it made MS Dhoni the most successful Indian captain in the history of Test cricket. Having drawn level with Sourav Ganguly in the first Test in Chennai, Dhoni made the record his own on Tuesday when India’s spin duo of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja put the Australians in a spin.

Against the backdrop of poor form and captaincy, as well as India’s embarrassing 2-1 defeat to England at home last year, Dhoni came into this series as a marked man. In Chennai, he answered his critics with a career-best 224 that almost single-handedly scripted victory, and now in Hyderabad he has overseen a huge win that has put India ahead with an unassailable 2-0 series lead.
