Shane Watson captained Australia in the fourth and final Test against India recently, but his poor showing does not guarantee him neither his batting spot nor his role as Michael Clarke’s deputy for the Ashes, Aussie chairman of selectors John Inverarity hinted on Tuesday.
Speaking for the first time after Australia’s humiliating 4-0 whitewash in the Test series against India Inverarity said although the team still needed Watson because of his talent and experience, his showing with the bat – averaging 16.5 in India and 24.11 in the past two years – was very frustrating.
“Things will always be discussed. Every aspect of the team will be discussed, players and leadership roles, that is absolutely normal and it will be done so again,” Inverarity replied when asked whether Watson’s role as team’s vice-captain will be reconsidered before the Ashes. Read more
