Chanderpaul and Samuels revive West Indies
West Indies bedded in for a long first innings on the opening day in Cape Town as Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels, the two batting mainstays from Port Elizabeth, began a repeat performance. They steadied West Indies’ innings after three wickets had fallen before lunch, including Chris Gayle for a flamboyant 46, but the South African attack then began to toil against two batsmen who are becoming familiar obstacles.
The afternoon session was a soporific affair but served West Indies’ cause well on a tricky surface and with a slow outfield which made scoring hard work. Once the hardness disappeared from the new ball it became a war of attrition as Chanderpaul and Samuels added 83 in 34 overs. Samuels took 28 balls to open his account and provided another example of his new-found diligence at the crease, although still pulled out a couple of piercing drives when the ball was overpitched.
