The Bangalore Royal Challengers’ attempt to solve the riddle of Twenty20 batting came unstuck again at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, as the Deccan Chargers restricted them to a below-par 156 for 8. They seemed on course for much more at the halfway stage, when they were cruising at 80 for 1, but then fell away in the second half as the Deccan bowlers struck back with regular wickets, in the process exposing - yet again - Bangalore’s lack of firepower.
Rahul Dravid has insisted that his team isn’t a Test side playing Twenty20, but it was impossible to escape that feeling during the second half of Bangalore’s innings. The team did make a few changes to turn things around - Virat Kohli was promoted up the order and justified that move in a fine partnership with Wasim Jaffer, while Misbah-ul-Haq got a game at last - but the end result wasn’t one which would satisfy the captain.
