Australia and South Africa are incapable of competing without pre-series bluster but Tim Nielsen, the Australia coach, has said Graeme Smith’s men face an enormous task to back up their words with on-field success. South Africa’s coach Mickey Arthur said earlier this week his side would try to exploit Andrew Symonds’ temperament and the uncertainty over Matthew Hayden’s future when the first Test starts in Perth on December 17.

Arthur labelled South Africa’s fast-bowling line-up as the most exciting group he had been around and Smith has spoken of the team’s confidence in the lead-up to the tour. However, Smith had also sparked a pre-series war of words in 2005-06 only for his side to lose 2-0 and Nielsen said the Australians would not hesitate to remind South Africa of their poor record in Australia, where they have won one Test in the post-isolation era. Read more

“I think a few of the England players should reflect on what happened in their country before they start pulling out of cricket matches in India,” said the former Australia pacer. Read more

Not many noticed, but when Yere Goud quietly - he wouldn’t know any other way - walked out to field against Andhra last week, he became only the 16th player to have played 100 Ranji Trophy matches. It is a proud achievement, and also a damning one: because while you have to be good enough to be selected for your state side, you also have to miss out on the national selection to play so many matches.

A glance at the list tells a story. Out of the 16, 10 have never played for India, and two played fewer than 10 Tests. The 10 include the well-known Rajinder Goel, Amol Muzumdar, Amarjeet Kaypee and Kanwaljit Singh, and the less celebrated Tushar Arothe and Ravinder Chadha. Goud falls in the second category. Read more

Punjab resumed with five wickets in hand and needing 56 runs to avoid an innings defeat. Overnight batsmen Uday Kaul and Ankur Kakkar resisted for 10 overs before Trivedi struck twice in five balls, getting rid first of Kakkar and then bowling Ravneet Ricky. Read more

Yere Goud’s stodgy defence stood between Uttar Pradesh and a shot at an outright win, as he helped Railways avoid the follow-on. That brought UP out to bat and, in fading light, they didn’t push for a win despite their 146-run first-innings lead. In 50 second-innings overs, they managed only 118, and were content to protect the three points the first-innings lead gave them.

Goud’s innings, an unbeaten 78 off 231 deliveries, was significant because a different UP would have taken the field had Railways been forced to bat again. Goud had come in to bat in the sixth over of the Railways innings yesterday, when they had slipped to 10 for 3.

National selector Geoff Miller has admitted England’s players with a “sense of fear” should not resume their tour of India.

Miller has spent the day liaising with officials from the England and Wales Cricket Board, who have been in talks with security advisers both at home and in India to determine whether it is safe for the team to return and play the two-Test series.

England’s one-day squad returned on Saturday with the final two one-day internationals being postponed indefinitely in response to the attacks on several Mumbai landmarks, including the Taj Mahal Palace hotel where the team had been based at the start of the tour.

On the ground, though, the mood was markedly upbeat. “Mumbai’s spirit is such that we always come back,” Praveen Amre, Mumbai’s coach, said. “The important thing is to focus on the present and for us it is to play the game. What has happened is really unfortunate and we cricketers feel the same as the common man. But one has to move on.”
