Ian Bell buoyed by bowlers’ return

Ian Bell was pleased to see England seamers Stuart Broad and Steven Finn back bowling in the nets but backed county colleague Boyd Rankin to impress if given a chance in Wednesday’s third one-day international against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

England, after crushing defeats at Lord’s and Southampton, cannot win this three-match series at 2-0 down and now have just one more chance to rediscover the winning feeling ahead of the one-day Champions Trophy tournament, where they are the host nation.

Their cause against the Black Caps has not been helped by the injury-enforced absence of both Broad (bruised knee) and Finn (shin) but the two pacemen did bowl in the Trent Bridge nets on Tuesday. Read more

Trent Boult made the vital breakthrough with the new ball as New Zealand continued to press for victory on the final day against England. But England might consider themselves fortunate to reach the interval for the loss of just one wicket.

Joe Root and Ian Bell had batted without much trouble for the first 28 overs of the day. But New Zealand claimed the second new ball the moment it was available and, with its first delivery, Boult produced a beauty that swung back and struck a half forward Root on the pad in front of the stumps. End of over 110.3: England 237 for 7 at tea: Well, a huge success for New Zealand as Wagner picks up Ian Bell for 75. Bell edged the delivery and Tim Southee grabs a low catch at third slip. New Zealand are right back into the game. They need just three more wickets to get a historical win over England.

End of over 105: England 225 for 6: Lot of things are happening at the ground. Crowd are getting into the match more and more. New Zealand are getting half chances but could not really convert them. Meanwhile, Matt Prior has started hitting some boundaries and that will certainly release the pressure from both the batsmen. Ian Bell is batting on 71 and Prior is on 37. England have given their senior players the chance to play at least two county matches before the summer’s first Test.

Captain Alastair Cook, Matt Prior, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Steven Finn, Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott will all be available for two County Championship fixtures.

Nick Compton, Joe Root and Chris Woakes have the chance to play three matches and Graham Onions four.

England face New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s on 16 May.

Bell, Compton, Prior, Root and Trott have also been freed to play at least one Yorkshire Bank40 match.Read more

England will go into next week’s first Test against New Zealand with question marks over the form of leading batsmen Kevin Pietersen and Nick Compton following failures in the ongoing four-day match against New Zealand XI. Pietersen had scores of 14 and 8 and opener Compton made 21 and 1 in their only prepatory innings in New Zealand conditions ahead of the Test which starts at Dunedin on Wednesday.

England were 256-9 at stumps on Friday, leading New Zealand XI by 333 runs with a day remaining. Ian Bell followed his first innings 158 with a solid 38. Wicketkeeper Matt Prior top-scored in the second innings with 68 after making 41 in the first while captain Alastair Cook was run out for 24 after making 60 in the first innings. Read more

Two late wickets put England in control as a New Zealand XI reached 224-6 at the end of the second day of their warm-up match in Queenstown.

Dean Brownlie was caught down the leg side for 63 in the penultimate over of the day off Jonathan Trott before Graeme Swann trapped Jimmy Neesham lbw for a duck.

England lead by 202 runs, having been dismissed for 426 in the first innings.

Ian Bell hit an unbeaten 127 as England reached 357-7 on the opening day of their tour match against a New Zealand XI in Queenstown.

Captain Alastair Cook made 60 and Joe Root 49, while Jimmy Neesham took 4-65.

The tourists showed their intention to persevere with Nick Compton as Cook’s Test opening partner by selecting him over Root in that position.

The four-day match is England’s only warm-up game ahead of the three-Test series starting in Dunedin on 6 March. Read more

England batsman Ian Bell is backing plans to increase drug testing in the wake of Tom Maynard’s death.

Surrey batsman Maynard, 23, was high on cocaine and ecstasy when he was electrocuted on a live track then hit by a train last June. An inquest concluded his death was accidental.

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is now preparing to step up testing.

Bell said: “I would welcome testing for recreational drugs. Other sports are doing it, so why not?”

New Zealand v England: Tourists level one-day series

England strolled to an eight-wicket win over New Zealand in Napier to level the one-day international series at 1-1.

The tourists bowled tightly early on, but Ross Taylor (100) added exactly 100 in nine overs with skipper Brendon McCullum who smashed 74 from 36 balls.

The Kiwis were eventually bowled out for 269 as James Anderson took 5-34.

Alastair Cook (78) and Ian Bell (44) shared 89 for the first wicket before Joe Root (79 not out) and Jonathan Trott (65 not out) saw England home. Read more

Ian Bell struck an unbeaten 113 as England sealed a seven-wicket victory in the final one-day international, India winning the series 3-2.

In the first international played at Dharamsala, Tim Bresnan (4-45) twice struck in successive balls as India were 226 all out having been put in.

Suresh Raina (83), dropped on five and 61, made his fourth consecutive fifty.

But Bell shared in three 50 stands and hit his first overseas ODI hundred as England won with 16 balls remaining. Read more
