Women bring Indian fashion franchise to Central Ohio
A new Central Ohio business offering designer clothing is anything but an average designer clothing store.
Maanya Indian Boutique, located at 10253 Sawmill Road in Powell, opened its doors Thursday, Oct. 9.
The store offers women’s fashions straight from India, including chudidars — tight-fitting pants designed to be longer than the legs so that the excess length appears in folds at the ankle — and ghagharas, which are colorful skirts that start narrow at the waist and then become wider.
Maanya is a well-known franchise offering designer clothing to women in India, but it’s entirely new to Central Ohio, said Powell resident Naina Pothini, who co-owns the store with a group of women.
“(It’s) the very latest in fashion,” Pothini said.
The store also sells diamond jewelry, which differentiates it from the Maanya store in India, which focus primarily on clothing.
“The jewelry we have is Indian authentic diamonds; of course, these are very, very good in quality,” Pothini said. “We are getting them separately from a wholesaler based in Mumbai.”
Clothing can range in price from $30 to $1,000, while jewelry starts around $250 and goes all the way up to $6,000. Maanya also offers silver jewelry, which can cost from $2.50 to $100.
Obtaining items from wholesalers allows the store to keep its prices competitive, Pothini said.
“It’s good quality at good prices,” she said. “What else do you want?”
Bringing Maanya, whose wares known to the local Indian community but have traditionally been difficult to obtain, to the area is a good opportunity for the region, Pothini said, particularly the Indian community.
“We’re getting the same clothes for them here for the same prices they would pay … in India,” she said.
The owners of the Powell store hope to be able to expand throughout Ohio and the surrounding states, said Pothini.
“Bringing this kind of shop to this extent in … Ohio is such a different experience for us, and of course for the people too,” she said. “This is one of a kind in Central Ohio.”Read more
