# Since Joe Zee became Elle’s creative director, it’s been one uninteresting cover after another (Madonna, Natalie Portman, Rihanna) — but the January cover took the cake as far as we’re concerned. There’s beautiful Beyonce, on subscribers’ covers (there is an alternative, much prettier cover on the stands), made up to look like an absolute horror show, with major Cleopatra eyes on a very pale face and frosted pale pink lips, wearing a patent leather “cage coat” from Yves Saint Laurent.

# Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley made a fashion statement with a $20 black knit cap bearing the name “Obama” spelled out in sparkly stones. Talley noted that he’s also ordering up an overcoat with Barack Obama’s face done in crystals across the back to wear to the presidential inauguration.

# Kira Plastinina, the 16-year-old fashion designer and daughter of billionaire Russian dairy producer Sergei Plastinin took her rubles back to Russia, one more victim of the flagging economy.
