Scottish fabric weaves a spell on the fashion world
Contest for New York students to put our cloth at centre of catwalk
Featuring on the new shirts, socks and hotpants, tartan is already this season’s international must-have fabric. But if a new Scottish Development International (SDI) initiative proves successful, Scottish textiles of every shape, colour and style will be dominating the catwalks for years to come.
A competiton entitled “City Meets Country, Scotland Means Style” has been launched by SDI, the international trade arm of Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government. SDI invited students at New York’s world-famous Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) to come up with cutting-edge creations using Scottish textiles. FIT alumni include Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera and Isabel Toledo, the designer of Michelle Obama’s inauguration dress.
The SDI contest aims to create a buzz in the American fashion industry for Scottish fabrics. “If we can encourage young designers and the public to appreciate the range of beautiful fabrics being made in Scotland, we can influence the next generation of designers and consumers,” said Fiona MacLachlan, senior international executive with SDI, who is coordinating the competition.
