Fashion designer and Newport News native unveils line of jackets celebrating Tiana, Disney’s first black princess

Mychael Darwin has created custom-designed leather and denim clothing for the nation’s elite. Bill Clinton, Ken Griffey Jr. and Michael Jackson have all been his customers.

A connection to a cartoon character could end up being an even bigger deal, though.

Darwin, a Newport News native and Bethel High School graduate, was picked by Disney to create limited-edition jackets decorated with the image of Princess Tiana, star of the animated feature “The Princess and the Frog” opening nationally Friday. Read more
