Worcester shellfish farmers develop own innovations

Many Shore farmers raise chickens, corn or soybeans. An imaginative few focus on a relatively new crop taking hold — oysters.

As the population of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay continues to dwindle, entrepreneurs have taken to cultivating their own by way of oyster farms. The Great Eastern Oyster Co. has carved a niche just east of Snow Hill, in the waters of the Chincoteague Bay. After several smaller-scale attempts, Berlin resident Dave Chamberlain started the farm 10 years ago.

“I came down here with the idea of growing things off the bottom,” said Chamberlain, a former industrial arts teacher. Read more
