Nokia, Qualcomm Pair To Bring Symbian Phones to U.S.

Nokia and Qualcomm on Tuesday announced a joint effort to ramp up the availability of Symbian OS S60 smartphones in North America by working together to develop new phones for UMTS networks, like the networks AT&T and T-Mobile use.

Symbian OS is the world’s most-used smartphone operating system, but it’s little-known in the U.S. because Nokia has been unable to convince U.S. carriers to sell Symbian phones. While devices like Nokia’s E71 and N95 have won our Editors’ Choice awards, they can’t be bought for subsidized prices in carrier stores, keeping sales low. Read more
