Samsung Galaxy S4 has already started to get in the hands of millions of customers worldwide and why should WIND Mobile customers wait for long? The Canadian carrier has sent out an email to its customers confirming that it’s launching the much-awaited handset on May 14, priced at $699 outright.

The recently launched Galaxy S4 doesn’t need any selling but still customers want to know the carriers selling the handset and also the best available deals. As the handset has already launched on other Canadian carriers, and WIND Mobile seems a bit late in offering the handset, the carrier wouldn’t want to miss out on its share of capturing more customers with the the help of the one of the most popular handsets currently available. Android toppled iOS last year in terms of raw users, but Apple may soon take back its throne.

A new survey of 16,000 U.S. smartphone owners found that almost one quarter of Android users had no plans to upgrade to another Android phone.

The survey was conducted over the past 12 months by research firm Yankee Group, which determined that “Apple’s ‘black hole’ ecosystem captures subscribers who never leave” and that “at the checkout counter, Apple continues to eat Samsung’s lunch.”

The group said that one out of every six Android customers will eventually switch to other systems, which should allow Apple phone ownership to leapfrog past Android by 2015.Read more

Digicel launches its own smartphone

Starting next month, mobile provider Digicel Group will sell its own Android smartphone, the Digicel DL600, in an apparent attempt to grow and monetise Internet usage.

It’s Digicel’s first branded phone using the Android operating system developed by large US-based search provider Google, but not the first mobile phone to wear the telecoms’ brand. The first were issued six years ago.

“While this is the first Android smartphone to be branded Digicel, we also released the Coral range of handsets in 2007,” said Group Commercial Director, Brian Finn in response to Financial Gleaner queries sent via its communications department.Read more

The Sony Xperia Z is continuing to hit headlines in the mobile phone industry, on account of its impressive early sales figures being clocked up in several markets in its short time on the market. This points to a successful 2013 for Sony Mobile, and the Xperia Z looks set to be one of most popular Android smartphones of 2013.

However, Sony Mobile has launched numerous entry level, midrange and flagship devices in its Xperia range over the last couple of years. In January 2012, Sony launched its Xperia S flagship model, and although this phone has now been on the market for more than a year it still offers plenty of impressive features to rival even more recently launched and more advanced competitors.Read more

A few months ago, I dug out an old cellphone for a friend to use in a pinch. It was an LG Shine, a circa 2007 slider that was one of the glitzier feature phones in its day, albeit nothing to write home about in 2013.

Or so I thought. With all that’s packed into our smartphones today, it’s difficult to imagine the Shine as anything more than a quaint relic, an artifact harkening back to the days when consumers stole music but paid for 15-second ringtones of the same songs. Surprisingly, my friend was thrilled because the Shine lasted all day on a single charge. Many of us haven’t seen that since, well, 2007.

I scanned a few reviews from when the Shine was first released, and the phone was generally well received — though poor battery life was a common complaint. Apparently, consumers at the time didn’t like having to charge their phones every evening. Read more
