Nokia’s Lumia smartphones struggled to lift the Finnish handset provider’s market share in China, while domestic vendors ZTE, Huawei Technologies and Lenovo overtook Apple in smartphone shipments in the second quarter, according to research firm Canalys.

The Finnish company, which once dominated China’s smartphone market, launched its new Lumia devices in the country in April, offering them with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.5 OS. But the new smartphones failed to make up for the vast swath of market share Nokia’s Symbian devices once had in the country, said Nicole Peng, a research director with Canalys.

Nokia had a 6 percent market share at the end of the quarter, falling out of the top five smartphone vendors, with its shipments down by 47 percent year-over-year. Affecting the Lumia’s appeal was Windows Phone 7.5, which many consumers in China are still unaccustomed to, Peng said.Read more

Mobile has started taking pre-orders for its Galaxy Beam projector smartphone in India. Currently, the device is available for pre-orders on Samsung India’s e-store at Rs 29,900 and the amount has to be paid in full.

The availability of Galaxy Beam on Samsung e-store has given rise to speculation that the company is on the verge of releasing the device in the domestic market. However, presently there are no details about its launch date on the website. Previously, Samsung was expected to roll out the device in South West Asia in May 2012, but postponed it.Read more

Domestic handset maker SMobility has announced the launch of its ‘Stellar’ range of devices, priced sub-Rs 12,000, as it aims to garner a larger share of the burgeoning smartphone segment in the country.

“The ‘Stellar’ range offers security as the unique proposition, promising protection against virus and data loss or theft on these Android devices. For this, the company has partnered with NQ Mobile, a leading mobile security provider,” SMobility Global Head (Devices) Kunal Ahooja told reporters here.

SMobility has launched Spice Stellar, Spice Stellar Craze and Spice Stellar Horizon. While Spice Steller will be available across the country from today, the other two would be launched soon.Read more
