Handset manufacturer Nokia announced the impending launch of the Lumia 928 smartphone, the latest installment in the company’s Windows Phone 8 lineup, which will be an exclusive to Verizon Wireless and will debut in the United States May 16.

The handset features a 4.5-in. Jet Airways recently launched its first mobile application for in association with Nokia, making this India’s first airline mobile application (app) across any platform. The app allows customers to book tickets, check flight status, manage their JetPrivilege account, and also avail of special offers among other features, a release stated.

Nokia today said the Indian phone market is expected to grow rapidly in the smartphone segment, and it foresee consolidation of the brands over the next 3-4 years. “The share of smartphones is about 10 percent of the 185 million market. We expect it to touch 33 percent by 2015,” said Ravi Kunwar, Regional General Manager (North), Nokia India.

Nokia is eyeing a major share in the smartphone market in India after launching its high-end Windows-powered Lumia range in December 2011, of which it has till date sold 20 million devices globally. The company is seeking to strengthen the smartphone portfolio as it faces tough competition from global rivals Samsung and Apple, even as it is also hopeful of its mid-tier Asha feature phones doing well in the Indian markets. Samsung has piped Nokia to become the largest seller of mobile phones in the country’s major markets, as per a news daily report.

Samsung Electronics Co sold a record 69.4 million smartphones in the first quarter, boosting its market share to an all-time high of 33.1 percent, data from research firm Strategy Analytics have showed.

Nokia’s shares briefly fell 12.7 percent to a year-low of 2.30 euros. At 1420 GMT the shares were down 8.7 percent at 2.40 euros, above the all-time low of 1.33 hit last year, but a far cry from their 65-euro peak in 2000.Read more
