Sony to jump into Firefox OS party is no more a secret. The Japanese giant along with other manufactures are more willing to support Mozilla foundation in building third most popular OS after Android and iOS. Earlier this year, Sony made it clear that the company will announce its first Firefox OS powered handset on the lines of Xperia E. The device will be sold in partnership with network operator Telephonica. Until now, it was known that Sony’s venture into Firefox OS part won’t include a high-end device. It will be repackaged Sony Xperia E with a new name, as the company uses Xperia for Android powered devices. Now a senior executive from Mozilla is speculating that Sony could end up making a high -end Firefox handset. (Via ComputerWorld)Read more

How it must gall Sony to find that along with the likes of HTC, ZTE and LG it is now firmly in the second division of Android phone makers, floundering in the spume and wake of the global sales monster that is Samsung.
Personally I blame a ludicrously complex model portfolio as much as lacklustre hardware. Can anyone list the current crop of Xperia handsets off the top of their head? No? Thought not. The opportunity to make things simple after the ditching of the Ericsson brand was squandered so it’s back to the drawing board we go.
Indeed, the first thing you notice about Sony’s new flagship, the Xperia Z, is that the firm’s designers have ditched all the familiar Xperia design language in favour of something startlingly generic. The Xperia Z is frankly a bit of a slab.Read more

We all know that many companies, like LG, Sony, and HTC, are gunning for the 3rd place position in the smartphone world. But would you ever guess that Huawei wanted to gun for that highly coveted position as well? Well not only that, but Huawei hopes to beat out Apple and Samsung for the #1 spot in the mobile market place in the coming years. Wan Biao, Chief Executive of Huawei’s device division discussed with The Telegraph Huawei’s goals for the future.
Biao stated, “If you look back five years ago, Apple is small, Samsung is not so big. You can’t see where we’ll be in five years. At least top three. Maybe number one.” Biao stated that 10% of the companies revenue goes straight into research and development for its handsets. Read more

Sony announced that it’s considering launching a Firefox OS phone next year and today released an experimental ROM to run the new Mozilla-made OS on the Sony Xperia E. This will give app developers a chance to evaluate the platform and give Sony valuable feedback.
In case you’re wondering why the company picked the Xperia E and not a more powerful phone, the answer is pretty simple – Firefox OS will target the very low end of smartphones. The E has almost the exact same specs as the ZTE Open and Alcatel OT Fire, the first two Firefox phones that were announced at the MWC.Read more

Sony officially unveiled its new Xperia Z smartphone in Australia at a media event in Sydney yesterday. There was little in the way of new information, given that most of it was revealed at the global unveiling in Las Vegas back in January, but it did give us an opportunity to go hands-on with the device.
More importantly, we’ve been armed with a review unit of Sony’s latest flagship Android phone and will be putting it through its paces over the coming week. Here’s our first impressions of the Xperia Z, including what we love about it so far and what we don’t.
What we like
The first thing you immediately notice about the Xperia Z is its design, something Sony calls “omnibalance”. That’s a fancy and quite frankly ridiculous marketing term that is about “creating balance and symmetry in all directions with rounded edges, and smooth reflective surfaces on all sides.” Putting aside the fluff, the Xperia Z is certainly a well designed smartphone. It’s comfortable to hold, has excellent ergonomics and the completely flat surface on the back gives it a distinctive look and feel.Read more

You may remember us giving the down low on the new Sony Smartphone, the Android Sony Xperia Z. Now Sony has given an official release date of the device in Germany. Per Sony’s Facebook page, it will be set loose on February 21st. We can make a decent guess that the rest of Europe will also see the phone the same day as it was put up for pre-sale orders in the UK already.
The Sony Xperia Z is touted as being dust and water resistant, 5 inch HD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, has a whopping 13 MP camera, and 4G LTE. Under the hood it sports a 1.5GHz quad core Snapdragon S4 process with 2GB of RAM.Read more
