A video has turned up online showcasing how Apple could change iOS 7 to be more intuitive on the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and the iPad 5 – it’s packed with interesting features which we’d love to see become a reality.

One of the great things about smartphone and tablet fans is a good chunk of them seem to be a creative and talented lot, because concept renderings are now cropping up practically every other day.

The latest of these is a video by a chap called Federico Bianco, who has created footage in Apple’s signature style which, if you didn’t know better, you might think came directly from the iPhone-maker itself.Read more

Amazon Smartphone to Pack 4.7-inch Display

Amazon’s highly rumored smartphone will ship with a 4.7-inch display, according to a new report published by DigiTimes on Wednesday. Amazon reportedly made the decision to move away from a smaller 4.3-inch display and to equip the phone with a larger screen following increased consumer attention toward larger “phablet” style devices.

Samsung’s new Galaxy S4 has a 5-inch display while the HTC One sports a 4.7-inch display.

Amazon is reportedly planning to ship the smartphone during the second quarter of this year, although recent rumors suggest the scheduled device launch was delayed due to production problems with Foxconn subsidiary Ensky Tech.Read more

Vertu, the super-high-end phone maker formerly owned by Nokia, may be preparing to announce its first Android phone. After an initial rumor posted by blogger Eldar Murtazin, the generally more reliable Blog of Mobile has found information about a device tentatively called the “Vertu Ti.” According to specs recently listed at the Bluetooth SIG, the Ti (identified with the code RM-828V) would run Android 4.0.4, while benchmark listings and other certification pages indicate it has an 800 x 480 screen, 1.5GHz processor, and NFC. Whatever the specs, the real value of any Vertu phone would lie elsewhere — the company usually incorporates leather, gems, and precious metals into its designs, which are some of the most ridiculously opulent on the market.

Vertu wouldn’t comment on whether this information is accurate, but the company has confirmed to us that it’s indeed launching a new phone next month. Vertu phones have run Symbian in the past, but Nokia sold the company last year and has largely eased off Symbian itself; heading to Android would be the obvious move. Potentially corroborating its claims, Blog of Mobile has posted an allegedly leaked image of the Vertu Ti, showing a design similar to Vertu’s 2011 Constellation T with Android-style back, home, and menu buttons.Read more

Samsung mobile head confirms 8-inch Galaxy Note

An 8-inch Samsung Galaxy Note no longer exists solely in the realm of unicorns and Apple TVs. A Korean news site is reporting that Samsung mobile honcho JK Shin has confirmed plans to release a midsize version of the tablet.

Samsung’s game plan of late seems to be to cover all bases, with a wide array of smartphones and tablets that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and price points. An 8-inch Galaxy Note to continue the trend could debut at February’s Mobile World Congress.

Shin failed to mention any other specifics of the new Note besides the screen size, but earlier rumors claim the middle child of Samsung’s scribblable device family will feature an 8-inch 1,280×800 Super Clear LCD display, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB to 32GB of internal storage with a slot for more memory. It also packs a 4,600 mAh battery.

With so many choices for touch-screen devices available now, I have to wonder how long it will be until Samsung puts its malleable display technology to good use and allows us to mold our own form factors, silly putty style. Read more

Give your smartphone Superman vision

A new low-cost, imager chip could give your average smartphone the ability to see through walls and objects Superman style.

The chip would not only allow you to see through a wall, but to see what is hidden inside an object and create images of what is inside. Suspicious package left on a bus? You could pull out your smartphone, scan it over the package and reveal whether it is hiding a bomb.

The scanner can detect guns, explosives and razor blades hidden within a range of materials. It can even determine the fat content of chicken tissue — making you wonder if you could use your smartphone to scan your date, and not just your meal.

This month’s IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits details California Institute of Technology electrical engineers Ali Hajimiri and Kaushik Sengupta, who have developed this tiny technology.Read more
